Where have I been?

This card was blatantly chosen as we all got through a lot of tea while I was there :)

Once again I'm back, after spending a few weeks interning. This time for a Financial Publishing company called Taxbrief's, who have just been bought by Centaur Media who specialise in Contract publishing. Everyone at Taxbrief's seemed very lovely and it felt great to be given some responsibility.

My role at Taxbrief's was to call clients asking them for feedback regarding their service and basically trying to sell them more newsletters/taxbrief's etc. Most people would find this boring, however I love a challenge and was happy chatting away to numerous accountants and independent financial advisors. On my last day, I received this lovely thank you card (above) from Taxbrief's:

I was also lucky enough to be given a £25 Oliver Bonas voucher, so after work I popped along a bought myself a lovely face mask and will shortly be purchasing my own teapot and also a "Gourmet Food for a Fiver" recipe book I saw while in-store.

Overall I had a lovely time at Taxbrief's, they've asked me to go back and are going to contact me when something comes up. This proves that internships are worth doing, as it really is beneficial for not only your CV but also for potential employers as they get to see your potential before committing.

So, now I have a week off until I start my internship at Hello Magazine. I will update shortly regarding my tips on the best ways to secure internships, I am currently on my fifth, which was the amount I aimed for at the beginning of my degree. I have one more scheduled at the Stylist magazine before I graduate next summer, which would take it up to 6 internships in total, not too bad! Until then, bye for now and I hope everyone's been enjoying the weather or at least enjoying their work!

Hello!!!

After a long day serving customers today, I got home to find an email from a Hello Magazine from the PA to the Publisher at Hello magazine offering me two week's work experience in the Commerical and Advertising department.

I previously met the newly appointed Advertising director Jacque O'Donnell after a guest lecture at my Uni who presented Hello's advertising "sales pitch" demonstrating the latest innovations within this field including footage with the members of the general public asking their views with regards to Hello magazine and the whole presentation designed in Adobe Flash player.

It will be great to see how the magazine is produced each week and will be especially helpful for me to officially decide if I am to pursue a career within the commercial side of Magazine Publishing as this is what I am planning on going straight into after graduation next year

Ideally if I could Intern throughout the summer holidays I would however it's going to be tricky due to working both days at the weekend, as much as I would love to work 7 days a week I don't think it's feasible.

The dress code in the Commercial and Advertising department is smart, this will give me another chance to wear my grey, gorgeous tailored dress I bought for my Dazed and Confused Internship, I can't wait.

The issue!!!

Here is the issue I worked on while Interning at Dazed and Confused Magazine, as you can see highlighted above is my name finally in Print! It is such a satisfying feeling and makes all the hard work worth while! It is also a really kl issue the "Augmented reality issue" and an Interview with the lead star in Alice and Wonderland, there maybe a few copies left in the shops if you don't already have this month. The new issue will be hitting the new stand over the next week. I bought three of this issue, one for my mum, one for me and one for my portfolio :)

My First Day : Dazed & Confused

My first day at Dazed & Confused Magazine was pretty good. My day began at 10.30 where I was greeted by a friendly receptionist. As I walked into the open plan office everyone were working hard on their Macs.

There seemed to be a laid back vibe to the office with most staff dressed casual but stylish which was cool. My outfit for the day was a grey fitted tailored dress worn with a skinny black patent belt, matching black tights & cardigan worn with my new bright purple ballet shoes. I'm pretty sure I was slightly over-dressed but I figured it was better to be over-dressed than under! I was then shown to my desk and was introduced to the editorial team; Sarah the Staff Writer, Tim the Deputy/Music Editor and the Editor, Rod.

I had previously met Rod at the 2009 Youth Media Summit, which I was able to attend with Interact Magazine. After the event, I went home and stayed up till working determinedly till 4a.m, re-designing my CV in Indesign and re-writing my covering letter.

The first task on my Internship was to transcribe an Interview. My desk is situated next to Tim’s who constantly plays new tunes, which is super cool as I get to listen to new prievously un-realised tracks while working for the next week. My second task was to check the magazine proofs, of which included checking for grammatical errors, spellings, puctuation errors and layout.

The final task of my day was to sort out the mail of both Dazed & Confused Magazine. This surfacely may have seemed like a tedious task but I actually had fun, despite having to sort through two large sacks. I got to also meet the other Interns from the other departments, one gave me a few “insider tips” he had previously spent time in my new position as Editorial Intern.

Overall I had a great first day, everyone were very friendly. I am looking forward to the rest of the week, who knows what will be in store for me next. Whatever it is, I cannot wait!
